How An Interrupted Meditation Is A Gift!

One of my favorite ways to groove into my meditation mojo, is by listening to music. And on some days it can be a life saver.

Like the other day, when I was listening to some of my favorite tunes with my earbuds at a cafe. Both of my ears were tuning into every note. I barely recognized an acquaintance walking by, waving hello, my ears were so focused.

I was lost in this beautiful place, and it felt so right.

But then this dude came in and sat down right next to me with a voice that was too loud. It boomed of Liver Yang. And he wasn’t about to lower it just because I was sitting there. So I tried hard to ignore it, but failed when my mouth sarcastically mumbled, “Oh man, you’ve gotta be kidding.”

My attention left my tunes, and zoomed in onto this guy. My perfect space was invaded. And the more I heard him, the less less I liked it. My mood turned on a dime, and I thought, “Who does this dude think he is?”

Just as resentment was moving in fast, I heard a voice whisper in my head, “You can turn up your own volume, in your own head-set. You’re free to drown him out.”  Wow, suddenly, I was eye to eye with the obvious!

So I turned my sound up, to concert hall level, and my previously peaceful demeanor changed to a foot tapping, shoulder swaying, chair dance. Smiling and getting into it, it felt good being myself again.

And now I was a more visible, bigger version of myself. It must have been waiting all the while, for an invitation to come out and play. It was like this dude with the loud voice, handed me a backstage pass to my own show.

So as I tuned him out and tuned myself in, I forgot about him altogether. I was back hanging out with myself again, and when I looked up, he was gone.

It’s only a matter of time now that someone else will come along and push my comfort zone. But now I welcome and realize unexpected encounters bear unexpected gifts. Plus, they always give me a great excuse to get my Krishna Das on.
